The future of science?society

Scenarios for alternative futures of science-society relations

An activity of pilot 3 action group

How will the embedding of science in society look like, when a programme like SwafS disappears or will be revived in the future? What kind of difference does it make to the outcomes of research and innovation activities when concepts such as the engagement of publics, openness, ethics and gender equality enrich the processes of knowledge-making? What if societies take new routes in science education?

We engage in scenario-building, because scenarios can be a powerful illustrative communication tool and spark debates about which future we think is desirable for societally engaged research. The resulting scenarios will be shared on the NewHoRRIzon website and open for use.

We will spend the first day with group and plenary work looking at different potential components of the scenarios: Which factors are important drivers of alternatives futures of RRI and SwafS? We will also open up the potential scenario space to extreme projections, e.g.: What happens if RRI materializes fully into R&I? What happens if there is no continuation of the SwafS programme?

DAY 2             Thursday, 28th November 2019

9:00                       Welcome, introduction of the day, reflection on day 1

Day 2 is dedicated towards rough sketches of scenarios. On day 2, we will bring together consistent components and derive provocative first rough sketches of scenarios. We will be guided by facilitators with a lot of expertise in foresight processes, and we will co-create scenarios in a varied process of group and plenary work and an energizing atmosphere.
