Description
Researchers from several southern European research institutes have bundled their efforts to address one of the most pernicious problems of our time: the lack of a real dialogue between scientists and non-scientists. In our modern times we constantly see the results of scientific work in our daily lives. From clean tap water to the smartphone and from discussions on climate change to designer babies: for those who want to see it, science and innovation are everywhere. Still, the scientists who work on topics like these and the people that are potentially affected by them rarely converse. In order to help tackle this issue, Jonas Krebs, Cristina Luis, Anna Olsson, Rui Guimarães and Alessia Dino intend to bridge the communication gap between research and innovation communities and society at large. For this purpose, they have started to cooperate on developing an original, effective dialogue system between citizens and researchers called Research Kiosk (RK).
The RK will be designed through a co-creation process involving citizens in 3 countries (Italy, Portugal and Spain). It started with the delivery of questionnaires during European Researchers’ Nights, to gather feedback on preferences for interaction. On the basis of this feedback the idea has been developed further. This process will continue with the implementation of live co-creation workshops in which citizens are invited to think about new ways to interact with scientists. The first Workshop has already successfully been held in Barcelona and the second is expected to take place in Lisbon. Depending on the workshops’ outcome, the RK might combine a live and online conversation dimension to allow the interaction between researchers and citizens at the two levels.
